For The Best 04:17
There was a bike I used to ride The brakes were iffy, I often fell off But I know, It was for the best It was for the best There was a girl I used to like She made me laugh all the time She had her doubts and I had mine But in the end it just wasn't right And I know, It was for the best It was for the best There was a truck I used to drive But I didn't pay attention and it took a dive I learned to fly I learned to fly too soon And I know, It was for the best It was for the best Things were nicer with my dad alive I used to cry all the time I used to cry too much of the time But I know, He deserved some rest It was for the best It was for the best And I'm older now So much wiser now It was for the best It was for the best It was for the best And I know now, That it was for the best

I Know 03:26
Tissues on the floor Ruby eyelids sore I've seen you The saddest song you know Played on the radio I've heard it too Strain you can't describe Aches that won't subside I've seen you You wanna throw it all Make a stain on the wall Say this what I've been, I'm moving on But it's so hard to move on Lungs are filled with dust Because of your sandman lust Now it's hard to breathe But you still wanna sleep Various pills on the table A viable path to be stable But if you try your disabled I've been there You wanna throw it all Make a stain on the wall Say this what I've been, I'm moving on But it's so damn hard to move on
3.
Floating 02:28
I am floating I am moving away I am floating I am drifting away Over the sea Over the sea I’m floating on ahead Don’t chase me out I am floating on I’m floating on ahead Don’t chase me out I’m floating on I am going I can’t be shaken awake I am the sea I am the sea I am floating I am moving away
4.
We are rising Always climbing We are shining, No more hiding Not today Not today Not today We are rising Always climbing We are rising, Now we’re flying Keep movin’ it up Stay uplifted enough Don’t give it all up Get Brighter

There's a light in the sky It's been blinding my eyes The daze it showed me Hinted lovely shades of life Temptations of it Seemed so worth it in my mind There's a light in the sky It’s been blinding my eyes There’s a light in the sky I tried collecting it's light Again, again, again, Again I'm seeing spots all the time I think I damaged my sight It goes to show this is what I'm owed Looking more than twice I've earned this burden It's all been burned in as I lie There's a light in the sky It’s been blinding my eyes There’s a light in the sky I tried collecting it's light Again, again, again, Again All it’s light I'm such a foolish one I stared at the sun I stared at the sun I’m just remarkable I stared at the sun I stared at the sun I stared at the sun Don’t stare at the sun Don’t stare at the sun There's a light in the sky I tried collecting it's light, again

Falling 00:35

May your eyes be unbroken May your heart stay wide open May your self be unstolen Let there be light Let there be light May your best be enough May you always give and get love May you keep on getting up Let there be light Let there be light May life be a gift when you’re woken May your name be a hug when it’s spoken May your time be used how you’ve chosen Let there be light Let there be light May you learn to let go May you be here right now take it slow May you accept when you have no control Let there be light Let there be light

Fuzzy static on the tv screen Play with rabbits till the picture’s clean Fight the sibling to choose what everyone sees Then get in trouble cause you got too mean Shake and stutter with a walk down the hall Find the one you like leaned against a wall As you make the move ya feel yourself falling falling Now you’re a tiny ball Remember we all start When we’re small and we don’t know the parts yet You can go slowly But take your whole heart Keep moving boldly And if you fail You can always find a new start Bruise your friends in a fit of young Your fingers failed to stay wrapped round your tongue Next time squeeze tighter to choke the dumb things you’d say Be honest, your lips sometimes spit crumbs Spill your coffee almost every day All that energy wasted away Ya get tired of making the same damn mistakes Why can’t progress be perfect always? Remember we all start When we’re small and we don’t know the parts yet You can go slowly But take your whole heart Keep moving boldly And if you fail You can always find a new start

Lucid Dreams 04:10
I've been sleeping all day, Wasting everything that I’ve been trying to save Spending loose change on lucid dreams Hoping to change reality And I'm dreaming always Pressing clarity for senses of the unseen I'm hugging fantasy living in theory To break the line is to break the ties The forces mending duality Are melded far too cozily But does is mean anything? Does it free from empty? And I'm stumbling when I'm not asleep And I'm struggling, struggling to be I'm stuck mind I fell through the glass half full Drinking not so much to be positively inclined To be infinitely defined And the crickets well they’re chirping all night Composing symphonies for my secret life And their melodies are making me cry They go And I'm stumbling when I'm not asleep And I'm struggling, struggling to be I'm stuck in my mind
11.
Roses 05:42
Roses are prettier, when they're not being scraped off your shoes And why did you have to step so hard? I don't know, I don't know When pollution is your safety word I'm sorry you've that you've never heard that it's Easier in life to be nice Smiling could be new A gift wrapped in innocence For no greater price than your pride I hope you find Roses are kind When you finally take off your shoes And What do you say? What's the point in wasted sound waves no one can feel? And what do you do when you're all alone? The only thing left alive The only thing left to sigh The only thing left to try I hope you find Roses are kind When you finally take off your shoes When you find Roses are beautiful You might finally take off your shoes I hope you find Roses are kind When you finally take off your shoes When you find Roses are beautiful You might finally take off, take off your shoes
12.
Bloom 03:25
We’re all damaged people Let’s go out to play A new day has started So that’s what I’ll claim I am sprouting now With more growth to do I came up from the grounds Now I’m feeling brand new I feel new Let your wealth be in moments Don’t let them escape Gold are good memories Don’t throw them away I am sprouting now With more growth to do I came up from the grounds Now I’m feeling brand new I feel new We’re all broken hearted So why not just dance Take the hand of a partner Then float with a laugh Go on and dance

about

When I started writing Anthesis I had one goal in mind; to create a sonic hug. A hug encapsulates imperfection, hope, and most of all growth. At the time, I didn’t realize producing a conceptual album about growth would take so much growing to do. The process required learning how to write sheet music for strings and horns and how to work with musicians far more accomplished than myself. Beyond expanding my musical skill set was a need to explore the intricacies of my own life. I worked hard on correcting my flaws all while discovering some new ones. I’m stubborn, forgetful, distracted, obsessive, and too idealistic for my own good. The silver lining is that all these personal shortfalls added to this body of work. And, unironically, the act of letting go was the hardest flaw to shake.

I have written and rewritten dozens of songs the past 3 years specifically for this project. At one point Anthesis became an overencumbered triple album with no end in sight. You know the phrase art is never finished, only abandoned? They forgot to include the potential for art to become a jail to creativity. I realized my idealism may have been hindering the process when, a week before mastering, I casually told my friend Robert, “I think I have to re-record this song. It’s just not working.” His response was an agitated, “Oh god, you’re never going to finish.” I got a day into editing before accepting that this album about imperfection deserved to be imperfect. 3 years worth of friends asking when it would be finished was enough. It was time to let go.

I think I’ve found peace in this collection of songs- or at least enough satisfaction that I can move forward. I poured my soul into Anthesis with the hope that you find connections and meaning in it. Most of all I hope you feel a warm hug while you’re listening.

Enjoy the music,
Nicholas Roche
